LONDON BRIGHTON & SOUTH COAST RAILWAY. Official Items

229-1462. An Indenture made on the 4th April in 1865. Being a Contract for Works to build Stations on the South London Branch Railway. Between Charles Wakefield Jackson and George Shaw of East Street in The City of Westminster, these being the Contractors; and The Company which is incorporated as The London Brighton and South Coast Railway. The Contractors to provide all the materials and labour to construct and complete in the best workmanlike manner and to the satisfaction in all respects of The Company and their Engineer, Robert Jacomb Hood. Including the detailed Schedule and Specification for all the works required in the erection, building and completion of the several stations at Brixton, Denmark Hill, Peckham, Hatcham, New Cross and Rotherhithe. With the making of Booking Offices, Waiting Rooms, Entrance Gates, Porches, Staircases, and Platforms with Passenger Shelters, Offices and Lavatories. All with fittings and fixtures, plumbing, drainage and lighting as necessary and various heating apparatus. The Contractors will supply all required plant, tools and implements needed and will Maintain the Works. For all of this they will be paid the sum of Sixty Thousand Pounds, with penalty for not complying. On double size sheets of plain light grey, quality heavy weight legal paper with watermark, 15" x 9.5", 53 pages. Closely written in ink manuscript in a clear longhand style. The requirement is put in precise detail from Excavation and Drains, brickwork, stonework, paving, slates, tiles, roofs, gutters and downpipes, carpentry and joinery, glazing, foundry and wrought iron work, plumbing, zinc and leadwork, plastering, and on through to painting, papering and varnishing. The drawings mentioned are not included and their whereabouts is not known. The station names here given have been changed at various times and some of those used have been Barrington Road, Peckham Rye, Queens Road, Old Kent Road, Rotherhithe Road, and South Bermondsey. Robert Jacomb Hood was the first resident Engineer for the LB&SCR Company and later became a Director, he was one of a famous family with railway involvement. This is the original document, signed by Jackson and Shaw, sealed and delivered, and held in the company archive. Most substantial history and a unique piece. This has been stored over the years in the usual manner for such documents, as a somewhat flattened roll, 9.5" x 4", and is not creased. Slight age grubiness to outer sheet but delightful in generally fine condition.

Title page + 27 pages, each with a different type of van or box wagon., showing a detailed side and end elevation drawing with major dimensions. Company numbers, brief specifications, dates, name of builder and notes are given. Dutch text. This and that following are the official issue for company use only, all pages have various amendments and annotations in ink and pencil. Most informative and from a quite early period. Very scarce. These have some loose pages and a little fraying to edges.
