228-0830. "Royal Route to the West." Jigsaw Puzzle. Published by the Great Western Railway Company (Paddington Station, London.) Probably issued 1933. Manufactured by The Chad Valley Co. Ltd., Harborne, England. About 200 pieces in three-ply wood with printed paper affixed, interlocked to make a colour picture sized 10.5" x 18.5", from an original painting by G.H. Davis. Showing the GWR Locomotive No. 6000, "King George V", hauling an express passenger train along the foothills of Dartmoor, perhaps in the area of South Brent. The train is moving from right to left and three coaches are visible with "Cornish Riviera Express" headboards, the engine is not carrying a headboard but has got the bell on the smokebox running plate. It is in the original 2nd series brown cardboard sleeve type box, of 9.25" x 5.75" x 2.75", stapled together and covered with orange brown paper printed in black with the title, the publisher, maker and number of pieces, it is affixed with a label showing a small guide picture of the puzzle. This puzzle was issued from 1933 through to 1939 when it was withdrawn, the later ones had only about 150 pieces. This is perhaps the prettiest train picture in the series of jigsaws and is a most collected item, now extremely difficult to come by and seldom being found on offer. The box is showing all signs of age and use with some tears on the top and bottom end panels. The puzzle is complete with all original pieces, the picture is clean and bright, it is in generally fine condition. Certainly this will please.
