The author was trained as a locomotive engineer at the Vulcan Foundry at Newton-le-Willows and joined the Southern Railway in 1932, as a member of R.E.L. Maunsell's staff. It was he who compiled the official manual "Practical Hints for Footplate Men". The content of this book will please. Near mint condition.

Covering the railroads of the United States of America; under the sections, Eastern, Far Western, Midwestern, Colorado, Southern, New England, Electric, Pennsylvania, New York Central, Southern Pacific, Sante Fe, Baltimore & Ohio, Erie, and Great Northern. Containing an abundance of mainly steam action shots, produced as a lasting memorial to a railway era about to end. Very collectable, now scarce. Some foxing but fine condition.

Wharfdale Railway Offices, Skipton. 21st July 1849. 10.5" x 8.5", 2 pages with a couple of amendments made to the text in ink, by the Company Secretary. + a further page with a statement of Receipts and Expenditure from the formation of the company, 20th June 1845. A most interesting early item, the Directors adhere to their previously expressed opinion as to the soundness of the Undertaking and set out how the railway will link with other railways and proposals.

This being copy No. 1176. 11" x 7.5", bound in the publishers printed heavy paper wrap. Frontis plate + 664 uncut and unopened pages, with 272 photos, some of which are photogravure and one in colour, also drawings and maps, two of these fold out + 1 page errata. French text. Giving a full history and detailed technical description of the railways of Egypt and the Sudan, their locomotives, rolling stock and equipment, etcetera. A most important work, the author being a Professor at the University of Brussels. Scarce, this copy has the added distinction of being an unused copy which is ready for binding in leather boards as befits an item of this quality. Slight age grubiness on outer covers otherwise delightful in generally very fine condition.

First edition. 9.5" x 6.25", boards, gilt title on spine in a very fine condition wrapper. 10 + 398 pages with a frontis portrait and 3 maps in text + (16) pages with 39 photos. A biography, Billings made a fortune during the gold rush, was the first person to practice law in California and became the state's first Attorney General. As railroad entrepreneur he invested in the first northern transcontinental line, the Northern Pacific, and later became President. A definitive account of an extraordinary man. As new condition.
